Southampton booked their place at Wembley on Wednesday night with a memorable two-leg win over Liverpool at Anfield.Weathering a significant Reds storm across the 90 minutes, Saints not only held out but thanks to Shane Long made it a sure thing with a 1-0 victory Âaway from home. That complimented a fine 1-0 first leg victory at St Mary’s and now Claude Puel’s side wait to see if they face Hull City or Manchester United in the final.Saints haven’t won either of the domestic cups since 1976 and have never lifted the EFL trophy. It’s their first final in the competition since way back in 1979. They reached the 2003 FA Cup final, the last time they’ve visited Wembley in the final of a national competition. All of that is remarkable on its own, Puel has inspired his side to do something Southampton fans rarely see, but how they’ve gotten there is on another level. This stat from Squawka shows their cup run was a once in a generation event.
Even more impressive is that all of those clean sheets have come against Premier League opposition. Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Arsenal and Liverpool have all failed to score against Saints in this season’s EFL Cup.
An extraordinary achievement and one which Saints fans will be hoping is a springboard to major final success when they take the pitch at Wembley.
