With Vincent Janssen unveiled as a Spurs player today, the club have clearly identified the Eredivisie market as one with a few hidden gems.
Janssen was the top scorer in the Dutch league last season for AZ Alkmaar – by no means the best team last season – and this has clearly been enough for the Lilywhites to go for the forward.
It makes sense; Spurs were short of striking options last term. With Harry Kane their only source of regular goals last season the club relied on midfielders to boost their goal tally and whilst that seemed to pay off for most of the season, one injury to Kane could see their season completely unravel.
The signing of Janssen could be an inspired piece of business and might encourage the club to look to the Netherlands again for further reinforcements.
So here are FIVE Eredivisie stars that could be on the way to White Hart Lane in the near future…
Arkadiusz Milik
Ajax have a habit of producing top class forwards. The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Luis Suarez have all come through and gone on to the biggest stage from Ajax, and Milik could be the latest to do so.
The Pole outshone his more illustrious compatriot Robert Lewandowski at EURO 2016 and if Spurs are still looking to bolster their frontline, Milik could be the answer.
Davy Klaassen
Klaassen has emerged as one of Ajax’s main men now and captains the Amsterdam side whilst also being a regular for the Netherlands national team.
He can operate in the central midfielder role but the general consensus around the club is that he’s better further forward as a number ten.
The last time Spurs bought a player of this description from Ajax was Christian Eriksen and that didn’t turn out too badly did it?
Davy Propper
The Netherlands may have failed to reach EURO 2016 but with players like Propper now emerging to help change the Oranje guard a repeat of such a disastrous qualifying campaign shouldn’t happen.
Propper scored ten goals and added a further six assists from 33 appearances in the league last season and for a team like Spurs that have a good amount of goal-scoring midfielders – Propper would fit in seamlessly.
Andres Guardado
The Mexican is a real favourite with PSV fans as he helped them pip Ajax to the title last season.
Guardado is creative force from both left back and the left side of midfield – he chipped in with nine assists last season – and for a club like Spurs that utilise their full backs as much as possible he’d be a good option to have.
He may be a bit older than most of the Spurs squad but last season showed they may need a bit more experience and Guardado would provide that.
Joel Veltman
Veltman is a centre-half but still managed two goals and five assists in the Eredivisie last season. The defender would face strong competition from Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen at Spurs but he certainly has the potential to oust them and with Champions League experience under his belt – something Spurs are going to need next season – he could be an important player for them for years to come.
